February 27th – Save the date for local

Celebrate local at your local Sobeys & Foodland
Local Day at your local Sobeys & Foodland – Feb 27th

In 1907, J.W. Sobey started a meat delivery business in Pictou County. With a horse-drawn cart, he purchased and collected livestock from local farmers for resale to local customers. The business grew thanks to loyal customers, and in 1924, J.W.’s son Frank convinced his father to expand beyond meat and a few local vegetables to a full line of groceries. This brought not only new grocery options to locals, but new opportunities for local producers to sell their products. The Sobeys chain had officially begun, growing quickly to six stores throughout Pictou County and the surrounding counties, creating local jobs and contributing to the economy. Today, Sobeys is a major national retailer, providing food for millions of people across Canada. But Sobeys’ commitment to supporting local is alive and well, just like it was back in 1907. In 2014 alone, Sobeys purchased more than $25 million in produce from over 100 local Nova Scotia producers.

On February 27th, Sobeys stores in Yarmouth, Sydney River and Bedford along with Foodlands in Tatamagouche and Chester will host Local Day – a celebration of local food products and the people who produce them. It’s a chance to learn about the food you eat and meet some of the people who produce it. It’s also a great chance to support those local producers by filling your cart with local. And hey, what would a celebration be without a little extra fun? Take a selfie in-store at Local Day and you could win a Sobeys gift basket full of local products.

So it’s the middle of winter. What could possibly be local? You might be surprised. With modern cold storage techniques and greenhouse growing in Nova Scotia, there are local produce options from apples to turnips to tomatoes. Not to mention eggs, meat, cheese and more. Local Day is a great chance to experience local at it’s best and discover just how many products are available. We bet the variety might just surprise you. Especially when you explore beyond the produce, dairy and meat departments. Sobeys in-store bakery department turns out fresh-baked local goodness every day, plus they carry baked goods from other local producers. And as you shop throughout the store, you’ll find local down almost every aisle – products like:

Acadian Maple
PURE Infused
Nova Scotia Fishermen
HASKAPA Products
Cosman & Whidden Honey
Valley Kitchen flax products
Terra Beata
Just Us & Full Steam coffee

We’re lucky to live in a province with such a vibrant local agriculture scene, providing year-round access to fresh, nutritious and delicious products. What’s not to love? Whether you shop at a farm stand, farmers’ market or grocery store, it’s always a good time to shop local. And with great food, local producers, sampling and entertainment, Local Day at Sobeys and Foodland is guaranteed to be a good time too. We hope to see you there.
