The Best NS Jams, Jellies, and Other Toast Toppers

Even if you don’t cook, you can make toast. These local toast toppings will make your breakfast (or any toast time of day) even tastier.

Toast Topper # 1 – Tangled Garden Gooseberry Lemon Balm Jam

We’ve been a fan of Tangled Garden products for years. For breakfast, we love their Gooseberry Lemon Balm Jam. If you haven’t had gooseberries before, they’re slightly tangy, but in this jam, the tang plus sweetness from sugar and the citrusy notes from the lemon is a tasty trio. We slathered it on our toast with some butter. They suggest trying it on English muffins, so we did that too. Also great.

Toast Topper # 2 – HardyWares Preserves Quince Jelly

HardyWares Preserves is another great small-batch producer. If you can make it into a jelly, jam, or preserve, HardyWares has probably done it. Our pick for an awesome toast toppers is their Quince Jelly. What’s a quince? It’s somewhere between the flavour of an apple and a pear with a slightly tropical hint. They aren’t the easiest fruit to work with, but HardyWares makes it taste easy. Honorable mention for their Blueberry Rhubarb spread as well.

Toast Topper # 3 – Galloping Cows Brandy Cranberry Marmalade

Galloping Cows Fine Foods is always on our list of stops when we’re passing through Cape Breton, but luckily, you can also shop online. We don’t usually drink at breakfast, but we will dig deep into a jar of this marmalade. The cranberries are hand-picked locally, and the brandy gives the jam nice depth and richness. Bonus! It also makes a great glaze for pork.

Toast Topper # 4 – Cornect Family Farm HoneyLiscious Cinnamon Spread

Cornect Family Farm has been producing artisan honey from the many wildflowers and blueberry blossoms in their surrounding area for over 19 years. So, when we saw their HoneyLiscious Cinnamon Spread, we knew we were in for something great. If you’ve never had the simple pleasure of honey and cinnamon drizzled on toast, you’ve been missing out. Little secret…we also spread this on French toast, and we are glad we did.

Toast Topper # 5 – Seafoam Lavender Jelly

When you think lavender, you might think skincare or fragrance products. But, did you know lavender is also edible? Seafoam Lavender grows its own lavender and uses it to produce a variety of wonderful products including their unique lavender jelly.  It’s sweet, fruity, and mildly floral. They also make a lavender honey that will knock your socks off!

Toast Topper # 6 – Big Cove Foods Root Beer Jelly

Root beer for breakfast? Straight up. It might take a second to wrap your mind around this one, but the sweetness of the root beer combined with the earthy, savoury flavours that make root beer so good, make this jelly stand out. Whether you’re a kid or you want to feel like one for a minute, you should try this. Nicely done Big Cove!
