Wild Blueberry Chutney (Taste of NS)


8 cups (2L) wild blueberries
1 1/2 cups (375mL) golden seedless raisins
1 cup (250mL) white vinegar
1 1/2 cups (375mL)brown sugar, packed
1 cup (250mL) onions, peeled & finely chopped
2 Tbsp (25mL) orange zest
1 tsp. (5mL) dry mustard
1/2 tsp. (2mL) ground ginger
1/2 tsp. (2mL) ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. 1mL) salt
pinch cayenne pepper and nutmeg


  1. In a large heavy saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring to a gentle boil and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring frequently.
  2. Remove about half the sauce and puree in food processor or blender.
  3. Return to saucepan and continue simmering, stirring frequently, until thickened, for about 20 minutes. Continue to stir for additional 5 minutes, if necessary skim foam as required. Pour into hot sterilized bottles. Seal and cool.
